Project report:
From 28 June to 6 July 2025, me and my other 2 Czech friends had the chance to join the training course “Leadership Goes Green”. We stayed in the small town Rio Maior in Portugal. It was a pleasure to be hosted by the H2O organization. Thanks to the perfect preparation and organization skills of our leaders and volunteers, we were able to express ourselves, explore, learn and have fun at the same time.
The goal of the project was to help youth workers (us) build leadership skills focused on environmental sustainability. We learned how to support and encourage young people to become more active in their local participation.
Everything was based on non-formal education, which means we tried all types of activities – discussions, projects, campaigns, group works, quizzes… We learned how to work in a team, under the time pressure and how to cope with obstacles. One whole day was dedicated to the online and offline campaigns, based on the needs and problems of people in Rio Maior. We firstly asked them about the environmental situation in their area and then tried to come up with a solution for them. My favorite learning method during the week was the Six thinking hats, which seeks to explore problems through various perspectives. While exploring the local area, we got to know the village of Arrouquelas, went to the beach in Nazaré or tried multiple restaurants with Portuguese cuisine. We also got free access to the outside swimming pool, which was a really nice way to relax after our sessions, especially in the hot temperatures.
It was really a pleasure to be part of a project like this and to be surrounded by open minded, optimistic, motivated and passionate people. We learned a lot from each other and everyone was always very supportive. Thanks a lot to everyone who made this project possible. The most important thing that I learned and realized is that every individual can do something to ensure a better future for us all. Everything that we do or try to do counts.
