Project report:
Green Bites for Sustainable Nutrition was a dynamic Youth Exchange in Berlin, created to explore nutrition habits with focus on environmental sustainability, and culinary arts. Young people from diverse backgrounds made project proactive learning and facilitators engaged participants in practical workshops, made useful field trip to the farm and provided us with cooking challenges. The primary goal was to foster a deeper understanding of where food comes from and how dietary choices impact the planet, starting from the source, finishing on the plate.
The project, at the end, met its objectives through practical solutions and non-formal education methods. Participants discussed and debated the physiological, environmental and psychological aspects of nutrition. Through revising our own habits, the group successfully minimized food waste, learned new recipes and left the project with solutions. For many participants, this was a transformative experience to prepare plant-based meals, changing food habits and finding alternatives to common food.
One day we experienced staying on a local organic farm to see a community sustained farming programme, where we experienced interesting discussions with people, working on the site and gained new ideas, how farming could be different.
Further learning experiences were cultural evenings dedicated to preparing your traditional food, using sustainable ingredients, without using meat. National groups prepared their programs with food, drinks, music, and traditional dishes to show our differences, but also similarities among European countries. Some participants also helped to cook meals for shelter with homeless people in Berlin and reported this activity as a valuable experience in their life.
By the end of the exchange, participants built strong connections, developed cultural aspects, and some science competence regarding nutrition and sustainability. This youth exchange showed us that food could be cooked delicious, responsible and in a creative way. Thanks to the facilitators and participants for making this project a valuable experience.
