Cześć! Welcome to Poland! It was an absolute privilege to travel with our Czech team to the quiet and atmospheric village of Wojnicz for the “Impact Makers” youth exchange. We were all excited to focus on a topic that is so important to us: youth participation and active citizenship. Over the course of the project, we formed an incredible community with participants from Poland, Spain, Romania, France, Hungary, and Bulgaria.
Thanks to the great organization by the hosting Foundation Ornament, we quickly became a wonderful team. During the week, our sessions had a rather calm, lecture based atmosphere. Instead of chaotic activities, we took the time to truly listen, absorb information, and have thoughtful discussions. We dedicated our energy to trying to deeply understand what “participation” actually is. Our main focus was figuring out the practical ways that we, right now as young people, can actively participate in society, engage in public life, and make our voices heard in our communities and even how to create our own NGO.
One of the absolute highlights of the exchange, and a perfect real-world example of what we were learning, was our trip to the nearby city of Tarnów. We had the incredible honor of meeting the President of Tarnów as well as the local Youth Council! We were given the opportunity to have a direct Q&A session with them, where we could ask questions about local governance, civic initiatives, and how young voices are actually valued in their municipality. After the discussion, the Youth Council members gave us a fantastic guided tour around the city. It was hugely inspiring to witness real life youth participation in action and to see how young people can actively shape their environment.
Moreover, we experienced the vibrant cultures of all participating countries during our Intercultural Night, sharing our traditional foods, customs, and dances. Now that we are back home, it is time for the follow up phase. We are ready to use our new understanding of participation to support other young people, start our own local initiatives, and share the best practices we learned in Poland. Everything is up to us, so please follow our journey and be excited once again with us!
To sum it up, if organizations like EYCB and Foundation Ornament didn’t exist to allow young people to experience such amazing things, they would have to be invented! Thank you to every single person who made this project happen! Thank you once again.
