Project report:
You might have come across a Netflix documentary called ‘Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones,’ which explores unique communities where people live extraordinarily long and vibrant lives. One of these places was Seulo, a village nestled deep in the Sardinian mountains, and coincidentally also the location of the Erasmus+ study visit called SEED (Sharing Expertise & Empowering Development), where we participated on behalf of the EYCB organization.
The goal of the study visit was to “SEED” in a figurative sense, as we planted ideas for rural innovation, focusing on the youth. For instance, we spent time with high school students at a Sardinian school, where we explored the core values of the European Union and discussed the exciting opportunities it offers, using creative non-formal education methods.
Another day, we toured a local farm that had been lovingly built from the ground up. There, we learned firsthand about entrepreneurship and resilience, as well as the challenges faced. Our journey continued to two other nearby villages, where we met with mayors and community leaders, and gained valuable insights into the rich history and the importance of preserving local traditions.
Collaboration among the participants was another highlight. Our Czech team hosted a workshop introducing NotebookLM, an AI tool designed to support future learning and smart study habits. The group also engaged in thoughtful discussions about AI’s risks, its potential misuse for propaganda, and ways to recognize AI-generated content.
The week truly had a bit of everything. We arrived in mid-November, starting out in sunny seaside capital Cagliari with temperatures around 20°C. Some of us even managed to swim in the sea! Just a few days later, after a heavy snowstorm, we enjoyed breathtaking walks with mountain views under clear blue skies, and didn’t miss out on a big snowball fight that brought plenty of laughter and relief.
And the food, oh my goodness, what an experience! In line with Sardinian traditions, we could choose from generous servings of both first and second courses, followed by homemade desserts that made us feel like we were dining at a local grandma’s table. All food was locally sourced, truly “kilometer-zero”. One participant even invited us to her family’s cheesemaking farm.
Last night, we also tried traditional dances and sampled authentic dishes from all the participating teams – Spain, Italy, Greece, our Sardinian hosts, and of course our Slovakian friends, with whom we formed a big Czechoslovakian team. Our schedule was packed with little downtime, and for three days, we had to set our alarms before 6 AM to make the most of the day!
Ultimately, we are genuinely grateful to our sending organization, EYCB, for this opportunity, and to the hosting organization, Malik, especially Iulita and Sofia, for organizing such a thoughtful, engaging, and inspiring program. Their enthusiasm was unmatched, and their flexibility and quick thinking made everything run smoothly, even when plans had to change due to external factors (and boy, did we have a lot: snowstorm, electricity loss, students’ strike due to lack of heating, illness of the mayor, etc.). I wholeheartedly recommend applying for any project they organize – you won’t regret it! 🙂
