From 22 June to 5 July, I participated in the Erasmus+ training course “Map & Compass”, organized by Outward Bound Romania in Sovata and the Gurghiu Mountains. Together with two other participants from the Czech Republic, I spent twelve days learning alongside participants from Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania and Spain.
The main aim of the project was to explore the principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) while developing communication, leadership and teamwork skills through experiential outdoor learning. During interactive workshops, we practiced active listening, empathy and peaceful conflict resolution, learning how to build trust and communicate more effectively.
Alongside the communication sessions, we learned practical navigation skills using maps and compasses. We put our knowledge into practice during a four-day hiking expedition through the Gurghiu Mountains, where we carried all our equipment, set up camps, cooked outdoors and learned basic survival skills. The expedition challenged us to cooperate, make decisions as a team and support one another in unfamiliar situations.
The programme also included team-building activities, rope courses, problem-solving tasks and daily reflection sessions, all designed to strengthen our confidence, resilience and leadership abilities.
Beyond the educational programme, the project was a great opportunity for intercultural learning. Living and working with participants from different European countries allowed us to exchange ideas, discover new cultures and build lasting friendships.
I returned home with improved communication and outdoor skills, greater self-confidence and unforgettable memories. This experience showed me that some of the most valuable learning happens outside the classroom, where real challenges become opportunities for personal growth.
