Giasas! My name is Betka and I just came back from my EVS on beautiful mediterranean island with difficult history – from Cyprus. I spent six months in the city of Limassol and I was a part of the 5th generation of EVS volunteers in local cultural NGO called KEY together with my flatmates from Italy, France and Poland.
It was hard to come back after this amazing half year adventure but as Cypriots say – ti na kanoume – what to do.
Soo…what exactly were we doing there? Part of our job was helping in local charity where we had to put some food like rice, beans etc. to the packages as well as washing powder or shampoos and they gave those packages to the families in need. Older ladies who work in the charity really liked us and had long conversations with us even though they couldn’t speak english – and we still cannot speak greek but they tried J
In our organization we were suppose to organize some intercultural events for youth but we were free to do almost whatever we wanted. So we had movie and intercultural nights where we talked about our countries, we could taste some traditional food, we had documentary screenings about history of Cyprus and Yoga week with yoga practising and mandala drawing. Also each of us had personal project – teaching Italian language, drawing sessions and me and my friend music sessions where we prepared concert for the Christmas party. And this is not the end! We had our own radio show in local university radio.
Despite of that we had a lot of free time for travelling so we could discover a big part of Cyprus, we were camping at beautiful beaches and hiking in pure nature. And we have met so many amazing people from all over the world who we never forget.
