Project report:
Project X-Panding Sound took place in August 2019 in Austria and focused on music. Its purpose was to explore sound in various ways. We:
- learnt to create music in a programme called Ableton
- learnt to record and manipulate sounds
- learnt musical techniques (DJing, soundpainting, drumming)
- prepared a performance
- worked together on musical projects
The project included 24 young people from Austria, Czech Republic, Romania and Estonia who spent this week packed with music in a remote mountain chalet close to Salzburg. We did not even have much time to discover the beautiful surroundings. Most of the time was devoted to learning and the intensive workshops gave rise to creative atmosphere which helped us create varied and amazing performances at the end of the week. There were multisensorial meditation, theatre, musical performance and DJ sets. The organizers and trainers were very devoted to our learning. For example, I asked one of them to teach me how to mix tracks in Ableton and he gave me two hours long individual session beyond the scheduled programme. They also prepared great conditions for performing. My highlight was when I was performing my song with my one-day-band there and all the audience in the dark room just with the stage lights took out their phones or lighters and started to make waves in the air in the rhythm of the song. Back then I thought: this is that kind of moment for which I make music.
