Project report:
The project Eco-volunteers in Tallinn was not classical youth exchange, it was primarily focused on high-school students and involved several youngsters from minorities in their country, for many of which it was the first time to be abroad. Together we were 45 participants from Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Czech Republic.
During almost 2 weeks long program we took part in many discussions in various volunteering topics, held some debates and played theatre and designed our own eco-volunteering project for our home country. We heard interesting stories from experienced volunteers from Food bank, Let’s do it project and GLEN program. We got the rewarding feeling of doing something useful when raking leaves in a zoo or collecting garbage in the city park and on the beach. Especially the beach! After one hour of cleaning we created huge pile of waste involving tires, pieces of metals, plenty of plastics and uncountable number of sanitary products that people flush into the toilet instead of putting it into the bin. We had also opportunity to see how the waste incineration plant works in Tallinn and got a lecture from professional working in plastics-recycling company.
Of course we also enjoyed getting to know the cultures of other participants during traditional intercultural evenings and exploring Tallinn on free evenings, special mention to the pancake restaurant in the old town center! Thanks to EYCB that enabled this experience to us.
