Popis projektu:

It will be based on a peer education methodology and works toward empowering young refugees and European young people to prevent xenophobia and intolerance among youth by becoming themselves the „teachers“ of their peers.

The novelty of this training aims to facilitate the social inclusion of refugees by supporting their process of cultural adaptation and reducing the discrimination they are facing. For this, it proposes an innovative integrated approach, targeting youth education for fostering the development of civic and intercultural competences, both for young refugees and young residents of European countries.

Participants‘ profile:  trainers, facilitators, mentors, educators, and volunteers actively involved in youth work.

The Peers for Integration Training Programme is a groundbreaking initiative within the EPTO (European Peer Training Organisation) network, developed through a unique collaboration between Ofensiva Tinerilor Association and several other partners. Designed to foster inclusion and combat discrimination, this programme has been tested in over 100 communities so far, impacting more than 2000 young beneficiaries. Its effectiveness in shifting mindsets and promoting tolerance has been widely recognized, particularly in the following key areas:

  • Developing critical thinking to challenge stereotypes that contradict human rights, while considering Europe’s diverse cultural landscape.
  • Empowering young people to resist social pressures that reinforce discrimination.
  • Raising awareness of both cultural discrimination and other forms of social exclusion.
  • Fostering tolerance and openness toward diversity.

Why this Programme is Necessary

The refugee crisis is one of the most significant challenges Europe has faced in decades. According to EU barometers, immigration remains the top concern for Europeans, with 40-60% perceiving it as a major threat. Studies indicate growing intolerance, with 61% of Belgians and 51% of Italians favoring a halt to migration from predominantly Muslim countries (Chatham House), while 84% of Romanians oppose refugees settling in their country. Young people mirror these attitudes.

Understanding the Causes

Research suggests that intolerance is more emotional than rational, often driven by fear and lack of knowledge rather than objective reasoning (The Uncertainty Paradox: Perceived Threat Moderates the Impact of Uncertainty on Political Tolerance). Misinformation and negative media portrayals reinforce stereotypes, triggering defensive reactions and social rejection. For young refugees and migrants, exclusion and prejudice remain major obstacles to integration.

Our Commitment

With 65-85% of refugees in Europe under the age of 35, exclusion among young people is a pressing issue. This reality directly contradicts the our vision because we strongly believe in „young people learning from each other how to embrace their differences and realize their unique potential.“

In response, we developed, tested, and continuously promote a peer-education programme that:

1. Equips young refugees with the skills to integrate into new cultural environments.
2. Provides schools and youth organizations with tools to foster cultural understanding and inclusivity.

Through this initiative, we strive to create a society where young people—regardless of background—embrace diversity, challenge discrimination, and build bridges instead of barriers.

The programme Peers for Integration, was developed by Ofensiva Tinerilor and partners under the guidance of the European Peer Training Organisation, in which we also a member.
