About us
We are a youth organisation that is focused on international youth work. In 2023 we organized 15 Youth Exchanges and training courses, and we are sending young people on many international projects abroad. Above that we are provider of the On-Arrival and Midterm-Seminars for volunteers in Germany, we host 7-8 of these trainings per year. We are also the coordinating organization for volunteering opportunities – that means that we are organising voluntary services in Bremen and also send German youngsters abroad.
Our office is located in Bremen, but we organize our projects in our KulturHaus in Garlstedt, which is close to Osterholz-Scharmbeck and 30 min by car from Bremen.
Our local and international projects aim to encourage and support young people through non-formal learning opportunities, especially focusing on the topics of interculturalism, tolerance, diversity and understanding among the different cultures in Europe. We are also organizing local events in Bremen and extending our network in the area by cooperating with other organizations and institutions.
So, who’s on our team? You can find out here!
And what have we been up to in the past 10 years? That’s what you can read here.
Social Media is more interesting? Here’s our Instagram and YouTube Channel !
Local Community Connections Volunteer
The main Goal – to help us find new connections with other organisations in Bremen – such as schools, youth houses, initiatives and organisations in the cultural field. That means, you will:
- Network with other organisations in the city and surrounding area, such as with youth houses, universities, NGOs, initiatives, the city council and potential new hosting organisations.
- Give presentations about volunteering and international youth work – do not worry, we will practise together and you’ll learn how to do it!
- Organising local activities and projects, such as clean-up actions, workshops on your favourite topics and activities for the other 14 ESC volunteers in Bremen.
- Helping out with website maintenance, creating materials for publicity, etc.
- Develop your own project ideas and learning goals – you can “shadow” other team members and support all areas of our NGO.
- Working together with the team members in all areas of NaturKultur e.V. and especially with our other three volunteers in Social Media, Content Creation and Sustainability/KulturHaus.
- Organising Tours in Bremen for participants on our projects and support the team with local actions in Garlstedt and Bremen.
To get a better idea of what this position entails, you can read Ana’s final report or watch a video about her voluntary service with us.
Who are we looking for? A person who is outgoing, loves to socialise and is open to step into the world of youth work in Bremen. You do not need previous experience – just be curious and open for new things!
We work 3 days together in the office per week, otherwise remotely. Our team does not only live in Bremen but also in other parts of Germany or abroad. This is why we have a very special working culture, being very different from many other organisations and we are looking for someone who likes to work independently. This is a project where self-initiative and implementation of own ideas is encouraged and developed and we will help you to learn everything you need, to become even more independent throughout the project.

ESC Volunteering at Kulturzentrum Schlachthof e.V. in Bremen, Germany

As a volunteer for Kulturzentrum Schlachthof e.V., you would join one of the biggest and diverse cultural centres of Bremen and help out with workshops for children and young people in theatre, media and music, while also helping the team backstage with their wide range of events.
Dates: 07.09.2026 – 31.08.2027
Location: Bremen, Germany
Hosting Organization: Kulturzentrum Schlachthof e.V.
About the hosting organization
Kulturzentrum Schlachthof e.V. is a very big cultural organisation in Bremen (North-West Germany). The centre provides a space for young artists, musicians and actors to develop their skills and grow, for example through providing courses and workshops for children and young people in a variety of arts, or giving their professional stage to upcoming artists. The centre also frequently hosts top-class musicians, authors and artists, who attract big audiences. On a bi-monthly level, Kulturzentrum Schlachthof also publishes the cultural magazine “Z”, produced in their newspaper team.
Located in the former slaughterhouse of Bremen, a huge building with industrial design, the organisation also provides professional training in stage and event tech. In the garden, the organisation frequently hosts outdoor concerts and events, and the neighbouring skating park is a popular place among the young people of the city.
As a volunteer, you would become a part of their big, self-governed team that is divided into smaller subteams, for example the team that works with children in a theatre group, the media team that provides courses for young people in videography and audio play. The cultural centre also organises a wide range of events – from climate change festivals to concerts, lectures and D.I.Y. workshops, where your support would be needed particularly for the visibility – taking pictures, videos and managing the Instagram Channel of the organisation.
Curious? Check out their Facebook and Instagram.
Your tasks as a volunteer would include…
In short, what you would be doing is:
- Becoming a team member in the Medienwerkstatt and supporting them with their workshops and production of videos, audios and project management
- Helping out with the theatre workshops for very young children and youngsters
- Helping with the organisation of bandcamps for older children from different parts of town
- Taking part in the editorial team of the magazine issued by the cultural centre (depending on your German language skills and interest of course)
- Take part in the backstage work of events (helping at the ticket and information desk, the logistics behind the scenes, the promotional materials etc.).
- Taking pictures and videos during events and organising the Instagram and other social media visibility
- Coming up with your own ideas for small events, workshops, exhibitions, …
As you can see – there are loads of different areas where you can get involved! Every Monday, you will meet with your primary supervisor to make a plan for the week, regarding which activities are going on in the house, where do you want to join, and what are your longterm plans in terms of own ideas and learning goals.
Don’t worry – you do not need to have prior experience in any of the areas or tasks described above. It is more important that you are motivated and curious to learn.
