Popis projektu:

This Erasmus+ KA1 training course is a 7-day international learning experience for youth workers, trainers, and educators working in non-formal education who want to strengthen young people’s active participation in democratic life and public decision-making. The training focuses on modern, inclusive, and practical approaches to engaging young people in democracy, moving beyond traditional models toward participatory, youth-led, and community-based practices.

The project responds to a growing gap between young people and democratic systems, where interest in social issues often exists but is not matched by awareness of concrete opportunities for engagement. Many young people remain excluded from decision-making processes due to limited access, lack of information, or low trust in institutions. This training addresses these challenges by exploring how democratic participation can be made more accessible, meaningful, and relevant in young people’s everyday lives.

Through experiential workshops, simulations, group work, debates, and reflective practices, participants will explore key concepts such as inclusive democratic participation, European identity, active citizenship, and fundamental EU values. The programme introduces practical tools and mechanisms including participatory budgeting, youth councils and parliaments, and opportunities within the European Solidarity Corps, enabling youth workers to better guide young people from awareness to action.

Special attention is given to working with marginalized and underrepresented youth, ensuring that participation processes are not only available but genuinely inclusive. Participants will critically reflect on existing participation structures, distinguishing between tokenistic and meaningful engagement, while developing strategies to strengthen youth voice in local and European contexts.

By the end of the training, participants will strengthen their capacity to design and facilitate participatory processes, support youth-led initiatives, and promote democratic values in their communities. They will also be more knowledgeable of the complexity of European identity and how it influences public space and participation in it (especially at the EU level). The project equips youth workers with practical tools, methods, and confidence to activate young people as engaged citizens who are able not only to understand democratic systems, but to actively shape them.

Ultimately, the training contributes to building more inclusive, participatory, and democratic communities by bridging the gap between young people and the structures that influence their lives.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for 3 motivated youth workers, trainers, facilitators, mentors, or NGO staff members aged 18 or older who are fluent in English. If you are eager to strengthen your competences in youth participation, democratic engagement, active citizenship, and exploring opportunities for young people at local and European levels – this training is for you!!

When and where?

The 7-day training will take place from June 1st to June 7th, 2026 (including travel days), in Suchá and Parnou, close to Trnava, Slovakia, in a very nice guesthouse. The venue is located in one of the districts of the city of Trnava, which is a regional centre and historical city located just 50 km from the capital and having a very nice and cosy atmosphere. Accommodation and food will be provided by organisers and travel costs will be reimbursed to participants after the training upon submission of required documents.

Training objectives:

  • Strengthen youth workers’ understanding of democratic participation beyond formal systems, with a focus on inclusive, accessible, and youth-friendly approaches to engagement.
  • Explore the relationship between European identity, citizenship, and EU values, and how these can be translated into effective participation in public space and meaningful learning experiences for young people.
  • Increase participants’ awareness of existing models, mechanisms, and opportunities for youth participation, such as participatory budgeting, youth councils and parliaments, concrete good practices, and initiatives under the European Solidarity Corps.
  • Develop participants’ capacity to design and facilitate participatory processes that actively involve young people in decision-making at local, national, and European levels.
  • Equip youth workers with practical tools and non-formal education methods to engage diverse groups of young people, with a particular focus on inclusion of marginalized and underrepresented youth.
  • Strengthen participants’ ability to critically assess participation structures, identify tokenistic practices, and promote meaningful and impactful youth engagement.
  • Foster cooperation and exchange among youth workers across countries, supporting the development of innovative approaches to democratic participation and active citizenship in youth work.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain key concepts related to democratic participation, active citizenship, European identity, and EU values, and relate them to youth work practice.
  • Identify barriers that prevent young people from engaging in democratic processes and propose practical strategies to overcome them.
  • Recognise and differentiate between manipulative, tokenistic, and meaningful forms of youth participation in various contexts.
  • Describe and navigate key mechanisms of youth engagement, including participatory budgeting, youth councils and parliaments, and opportunities within the European Solidarity Corps.
  • Explain European values and complexity of identity and how they influence public space and political decisions.
  • Design and facilitate participatory activities and workshops that actively involve young people in decision-making processes.
  • Support young people in developing and implementing their own initiatives, including community-based and solidarity projects.
  • Apply non-formal education methods to make topics such as democracy, citizenship, and European values more accessible, engaging, and relevant for diverse groups of young people.
  • Communicate opportunities for participation in a clear, relatable, and motivating way to increase youth engagement.
  • Reflect critically on their own role as youth workers in promoting inclusive democratic participation and active citizenship.
