About this project:

Young people coming together to explore photography as a tool to show the world how democracy can be seen through the lens. Participants will express themselves through their own photos, creating an online art gallery and a local exhibition to reach out to the community!

Banksy, Steve McCurry, Dorothea Lange, even AI-generated photos are used in the world to reach out, express democratic values and motivate people to act. In the world of today, where each one of us has a phone with a camera at all times, we are more than able to us it to express ourselves and explore concepts such as democracy, freedom, activism and radicalization.

It’s not easy to know, however, when and how to use this
superpower- so let’s find out together! We invite young people to join us in exploring the topic of democracy as seen through the photo lens, so they can be empowered to express themselves using tools such as their phone cameras and easy-to-use photo editing apps. In the end, we will make an exhibition together, both local and online, to showcase our statements to the world, with photos that say not a thousand, but a million words.

Objectives:

Together we will:

  • develop awareness of democratic practices and values in everyday life
  • explore photography as a tool to capture the essence of democracy and empower young people to express themselves
  • increase our competence in using photography as a means of artistic and political expression
  • leverage young peoples’ fascination with photography to enhance their active participation
  • create an exhibition of taken and edited photos from the participants themselves

Participants‘ profile/Target group:

  • This youth exchange is dedicated to young people in age of 18-26.
  • Participants‘ age: 18-26, highly interested in the topic of the youth exchange
  • No prior experience with photography is required, just a passion for changing the world and becoming active citizens!
  • Group leader’s age limit: 18+

Preparation before the youth exchange:

Take photos of your hometown to show during the intercultural presentation! We will use them instead of online photos or a Kahoot.
Also, choose one particular photographer to present; just a few photos and words are enough.
